Basketball on a Triangle-Chapter 10: Teaching Position Specific Skills
by Ronn Wyckoff ($Video )
There are lots of little details, that when paid attention to, can make a big difference in skill playing at any position. The ironic thing about improving one's game is that most of the "details" we will be attending to are just good basketball fundamentals that were not taught, or caught, correctly early on in a player's career.

The ironic thing about improving one's game is that most of the "details" we will be attending to are just good basketball fundamentals. The reason for this is usually because somewhere in the player's experience someone else didn't pay attention to the details, and making sure the player got them and learned them correctly.

For coaches, it's much the same thing. In order to be really good at teaching the game, one had to pay attention to the details as their career progressed. The teaching-coach needs to pay attention to all the finer points in every aspect of running their program, in developing their own attitudes, and in teaching skills to their players.

Coaches spend most of their time teaching the team game, because it requires that attention. There's so much that needs teaching with team offenses and defenses. Unfortunately, this may often be done at the expense of neglecting the individual aspects of the players' games. However, the teaching and learning of the team game can be greatly enhanced when the players have good individual fundamental skills.

When I teach coaches, I teach details. When I teach players, I teach details.
"Success is in the details!"

The areas we'll work on offensively will usually require attacking and finishing at the basket. When I work on shooting, I always include work on the free throw. If there is a problem with shooting, it most often appears at the free throw line too. Defensively, we work on things specific to the position of the player—positioning, over play/denial. I will try to leave nothing out, either offensively, defensively, or attitude-wise, that can improve the player's game.

Every Position...Every Scenario...Offensive Play...Defensive Play...All the fundamental skills--Passing, Dribbling, Shooting, Rebounding...

It's all here in one video.
