HOW TO MAKE THE MARKETABLE
PHOTO
EVERYONE KNOWS WHAT A GREAT PHOTO IS…
BUT
DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT A GREAT MARKETABLE
PHOTO IS?
You've heard it often, "That's a great
photo, did you take
it?"
Congratulations, your scenic mountain-at-sunset
won first place in the regional photo contest.
You scratch your head and ask, "I wonder if I could sell this photo…?"
Sure, -- you could sell it –to the local library, bank, or hotel. But
that doesn't make it "marketable." That kind of sale is a one-time
sale. You'll get only a few of those.
In contrast, marketable photos are those that have the kind of
content and treatment that make them sell over and over again for you.
And to markets world-wide.
With the help of the Internet.
You are about to save years of effort and discover right now how to
make a marketable photo.
But let's backtrack. Yes, you know good composition, lighting, and the
technical side: camera choice, lens choice, exposure, and equipment.
But what's missing? What makes the marketable photo, the one that sells
over and over?
No, it's not the beautiful sunset, the hot-air balloons, or the 4th
of July fireworks. The law of supply and demand eliminates those. There
are just too many of them available. Photo editors see scores of them
everyday. Landing a sale of one of your own excellent prize-winner
photos, in the sea of such huge supply, happens only once in a while.
Not often enough to pay the rent or mortgage.
Strange,
isn't it? What you thought would be a good seller, really isn't.
Knowing what elements make a photo marketable…
is crucial to creating ongoing sales. Most photographers take years
of trial and error to learn how they should approach their photo-taking
for success.
WHAT WORKS?
One of the important elements is that frequently photo editors like
to see
‘a story within a story'. They want to allow their
readers to "read into" your photographs. If your
photo reflects emotion, it'll make a connection with your viewer.
He or she will play an active role with your photo, when you give the
viewer leeway for interpreting your image.
This may take some pre-planning on your part, either anticipating the
photo, or perhaps witnessing a situation and later re-creating it under
different conditions, like early morning lighting instead of mid-day.
Most beginners at marketing their pictures make this initial mistake:
they shoot first and then try to find a market for their pictures.
Yes, it's possible to have a database filled with excellent snapshots.
With proper keywording, those pictures might find a publisher.
Here's a better, more efficient method: Decide what subject areas have
the most interest for you. Next, do some search engine research and
find the special interest magazines and publishing houses that focus
on your favorite subjects.
If you are a mountain climber, dog trainer, nurse, pilot, actor, gardener,
you'll find that there are dozens of markets already waiting for you.
Build a strong collection of photos in your favorite area (wild horses
can't pull you away from it), and you are on the road to quickly see
your credit line in national publications.
But you need to know what photobuyers need in a photo. Yes, they will
have a couple of beautiful landscapes and calendar-type pictures on
their office walls, but they will be signing checks only for marketable
photos.
If all this is an eye-opener for you, there's much more to come.
I've written an eBook that tells, "How
to Make the Marketable Photo."
This 36-page eBook includes 56 photos that show you what a marketable
photo looks like, and help you see how to automatically produce a marketable
photo every time by following four (4) easy principles.
You may be familiar with my book, "Sell & ReSell Your Photos."
Many working pros got their start in stock photography by reading and
applying the principles in the book, now in its fifth edition. To create
this new eBook on marketable photos, I've expanded and added to the
section on how to make photos that will sell over and over for you –
with the same attention to practical guidelines that make "Sell &
ReSell" so helpful.
